The Junior Volunteers group seeks to cater for younger volunteers, aged 10 to 16, who are keen to learn more about the operation of the NYMR and who would like to assist with the running of the railway. If you (or a member of your family) are under 16 years of age , there are many activities that you can take part in which do not require the detailed knowledge of safety procedures that are necessary for older volunteers. If you like the sound of any of the activities detailed below, follow the link at the foot of the page to the registration document and send it in to us. We will then send you further details as they become available.

Junior Volunteers Week

This will run from Sunday 26th to Friday 30th July 2010. It is one week later than in 2009, as a number of schools are breaking up later.

Social Events

The week will start with a buffet lunch, 12.00 to 14.00, for Juniors, supervisors, managers and staff in Pickering.

We are looking at the possibility of running a further three social events during the week, to include a beach bonfire at Upgang, with fish and chips for supper on Wednesday evening, a return ride in a brake van with a goods train from Goathland to Grosmont on Thursday teatime and an evening buffet train ride in a TSO behind the dining train on Friday, 19.30 from Grosmont, return at 22.00.

New Juniors

During the week those Juniors who did not take part in JV Week 2009 will follow a broad program of volunteer activities, similar to the 2009 pattern. Any younger volunteers from the 2009 team who also wish to take part again may do so.

Previous Participants

Previous participants will work at a small number of extended, structured tasks, each of which will take one, two or three days to complete. The aim of the extended tasks will be to train Juniors in roles which are essential to the maintenance and running of the NYMR and to provide an experience which can inform and shape their future with the NYMR. Each of the tasks will have an element of instruction, both formal and informal. Training will be carried out by experienced volunteers and staff.

B) Marketing (2/3 days)
  • Construct a portable display board that could be put up around the station.

F) Catering (2 days)
Serve cream teas in the GN saloon all day, i.e. three trips. Post signs on train plus portable display board at termini. Learn basic hygiene and customer service.

Learn the basics of retailing in the NYMR shop at Pickering Station.
H) One Day activities

Activity selection can either be a 2 day plus a 3 day activity or two 2 day activities followed by a one day activity. The program will be sent out in January for the Juniors to make selections so that plans can be finalised.

Supervisor Recruitment

I hope that all those who helped during 2009 will feel able to supervise again in 2010. In addition we will need to recruit more supervisors if we are to carry out our plans and take on more new Juniors.
